    The city’s firehouse officially put its recently acquired HAZMAT response truck into service Tuesday. The fully equipped mobile unit allows the department to respond to a numbers of hazardous emergencies such as train derailments, chemical spills and gasoline leaks.

    The Upper Savannah Regional Job Fair, which takes place bi-annually in April and September at Greenwood Mall, received a 2014 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations.
    The program will be honored at the Showcase Reception at NADO’s Annual Training Conference in Denver on Aug. 23-26. This will be the Upper Savannah Council of Government’s ninth project to be honored by NADO in the past decade.

    Sunny 103.5 WZSN-FM will not air Greenwood High School football games this season.
    According to the station’s general manager Dave Fezler, Greenwood High and Greenwood School District 50 wanted Sunny 103 to pay for broadcasting rights.

    While there are reasons to celebrate in our state -- the unemployment rate being so low, for example -- a report released Tuesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation certainly is not among those reasons.
    Unfortunately, while we have made great strides in building up our state’s business and industrial base, our position as a great place to retire and vacation, we remain a poor example to the rest of the nation when it comes to the welfare of our children.

    Did Barbie shoot down a Malaysian commercial airliner? No, but one would think the high-fashion doll did something along those lines because there’s been so much fuss over the toy. Again.
    This time, folks are seething because -- gasp! -- the Girl Scouts of America have given their OK for Barbie to wear the uniform and even lets girls earn a Barbie patch.
